I live in Baltimore, and leave it often. In the summer of 2016, I was also a distinguished visiting scholar in the Global Summer School at Beijing Jiaotong University. At present, I work in Russian, Afrikaans, and Shona, and I welcome contact with other unorthodox comparatists. In addition to my regional fields of Russian and African studies, I publish on novel theory, literature and philosophy, and comparative method.

Aside from academic books and essays, I also write for more popular venues such as Africa in Words, Bookslut, n+1, The Literary Review, 3:AM Magazine, Public Books, and LitNet and SLiPnet in South Africa. You can find links on my “Other Writing” page.

I can be contacted at jjacks98@jhu.edu, and am happy to share PDFs of articles and syllabi, or just keep in touch with scholars who have similar interests.
